royal teeth

New Years Eve I was lucky enough to get to see one of my favorite bands, Royal Teeth, perform at the Snowglobe Music Festival in Tahoe. It was amazing! Freezing, but amazing.

I arrived at the venue between sets so I could make sure I was right up front for the show. There was quite an interesting crowd at the music festival. I have never been to burning man, but I heard people comparing the two; the music festival being "like the playa, but with snow instead of sand".

I've never seen so many animal ears and furry animal hats on adults in public as I did that night. And everyone there appeared to be on some sort of substance. While I was waiting for the show to start, the same guy introduced himself to me three different times, and each time I told him a different, fairly elaborate, story about who I was and where I was from. He didn't catch on. Toward the end of the conversation he asked me if I wanted any of the various drugs he had in tow. I, obviously, politely declined. He looked at me as if I had three heads and said, "wait, are you totally sober?" "yes." "that sucks." With that I didn't see him again for the rest of the night. At that point a kid on my left who was wearing a short sleeve shirt in the 20 degree weather started violently vomiting and was escorted out of the crowd. Security covered the mess with snow and we continued to wait for the show to start. Two extremely drunk girls saw me taking pictures of the set to figure out aperture settings before the snow started, and they ran up and asked if I could take their picture. I said of course and reached for their camera. They pointed back at MY camera. "Wait, you want me to take a picture of you with MY camera?" "YEAH!" I stood there awkwardly as I realized these girls thought I was an event photographer. Luckily, drunk girls are generally pretty easy to distract. "Do you have a cell phone? If I take a picture with YOUR camera you will have the picture when you get home." "Oh good idea!!" I took their picture, with their cell phone, and they went back to dancing to the music that hadn't started yet.

Time for the show! I was so thrilled with their performance. The show was full of energy, they really had a way of interacting with the crowd. I wish the show was longer, but when it was done I could tell the poor band was freezing. Nora started the show with "ya'll need to move to Louisiana, it's not cold like this there!"

I can't wait for them to come back, I'll be there, up in the front, to see it again!

If you haven't heard of Royal Teeth, I included a video of one of their songs. They also have an amazing cover of "Heartbeats" by the Knife (which if you know me you know this is my favorite song...ever). Check them out, you'll be glad you did. Then when they are huge and famous, you can be the posh hipster that says "I totally knew who they were before everyone else did."

After the show I got on the shuttle from the venue back to the parking garage. I made it home in time to count down to midnight with my family and get Sage out of his crib for a New Year's kiss. Perfect New Year's Eve! xo
