wednesday!

This Wednesday was going to be about celebrating with vanilla muffins with lemon glaze, but this face looked up and me and made it very clear that the bug that I had last week had spread to the other side of the house. He walked upstairs when we got home from the grocery store, feet dragging, and stood next to his crib trying to pull himself in. So I gave him a bottle. Because we all need to act a little bit like babies when we are sick... (even people not of the one-year-old variety) and I let him have an early bed time. Before I put him into bed he laid his head down on the edge of my bed and looked up at me with those big blue eyes to really drive the point home just how yucky he was feeling. Heartbreaking, that's what that is.

Now I can't bring myself to make muffins without baby hands holding a spatula stirring (flinging) the batter next to me. So muffins will have to come to pass another night, but for now I'm going to enjoy this quiet house and this Wednesday night with a bath and a new book.

Enjoy your Wednesday!

Oh! And if you're in the market for a good book to read I just finished The Fault in Our Stars in three days flat. Cried my eyes out but would recommend it until I'm blue in the face.

wednesday!

it's Wednesdayyyyyyy!

This week I'm celebrating with a terrible cold -- not much of a celebration at all.

That means this Wednesday is about lemon and ginger tea (get some! -- not meant to sound pervy.. its really delicious and you should buy some) out of this giganto baby-painted mug (bowl?), vapor rub, a book, and the kind of buttery popcorn that is known to clog arteries instantly. See that basket of laundry in the bottom corner? Yeah, that's not happening tonight.

Send us healthy thoughts!
Or soup and grilled cheese thoughts. I'll always accept soup and grilled cheese thoughts. ;)

currently

Winter has been funny this year. Instead of snow the sky brought us warm rain, and we enjoyed playing in the outdoor sprinkler. In the desert warm rainstorms are few and far between, so we have to enjoy them whenever it is that they decide to stop by.

Reading
I'm finishing up The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. It's great. I joined a book club and so far all the books have been fantastic. If you do decide to download the Kindle or Nook version, make sure to get the version that isn't the Oprah Book Club version... unless of course you want Oprah's commentary throughout the book. Which I didn't, but have anyway because I didn't know the difference. Now I know.

Eating:
Breakfast foods for every meal except breakfast. #rebelnation

Thinking about:
Keeping myself busy. Between work, the after-school tutoring program that I picked up for some extra money, an online class that I enrolled myself in, and a one-year-old who has determination and scheme running through his veins (which is a lethal combination) I'm spread pretty thin these days. I found this article on stopping the "glorification of busy"... because you know what? It's true. Everyone needs to rearrange life to make time for healthy eating and meditation (two things that have completely been tossed to the wayside in my life the past few months). It's a great article on modeling good behavior for our kids and being your best (calm) self. Time management, self. Make it happen. *power fist*

Listening to:
Sage was sick and I ended up singing this song to him, which he loved (regardless of the fact that I sound like all kinds of dying animals when I sing). I love him so much I couldn't stand to put him through that kind of punishment anymore. I ordered a vintage 1961 recording for the record player and now everyone is happy. Thanks Ebay!

Watching:
Parks and Recreation on Netflix. Because Netflix, you are my one true love. Leslie Knope for president.

Enjoying:
The lack of snow this winter. My poor circulation, closet full of ballet flats and two wheel drive car would all like to take this opportunity to thank the gods of winter for having our backs this year.

a portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014

Every box, bin, book and crate is just a step to climb to something higher; reaching up on his tallest tippy-toes.

wednesday! 04

This week means hearts and kisses in some houses, but not in this house. In this house we have been making star-shaped cookies and counting down the days until Olympic hockey starts.

So this wednesday we are celebrating HOCKEY.

YOU-ESS-AY!
YOU-ESS-AY!

Keep your hearts and your mushy gushy slimy cooties and kisses to yourself.

But if you need a gluten free shortbread cookie to knock your socks off (make them in heart shapes if you must)... then you've got to get your hands on Bob's Red Mill gluten free shortbread mix. Bomb diggity, yo.

And happy early Valentine's Day, if you're into that. ;)

a portrait of my child, once a week, every week in 2014

A nail took residence in my right front tire this week and we found ourselves at Les Schwab Tires. Little did I know that Les Schwab is a little boy's paradise. Sage kept himself entertained climbing between the truck tires and eating  the free popcorn.

Not one breakable thing in sight; definitely our kind of place.

wednesday! 03

That, my friends, that I hold in my hands is a bag of Cadbury mini eggs found on shelves before Valentine's Day. This is the holy grail of candy. I heard rumors that some had been released early in some parts of the country, so I scoured the globe (aka I went three different places) before I found this shining beacon of hope.

CVS, you guys. They really have their lives together (judging by their candy selection).

Happy Wednesday! Go get some right this instant. You won't be sorry.
...then pick another bag up for me.. I finished mine before I was even done writing this post.

homemade play dough

Tonight we eased the blow of Monday by making some homemade play dough. This is the play dough I grew up making with my mom, so making it with Sage was something I was really looking forward to. This play dough is the play dough that dreams are made of. I'm not kidding about that one. This is play dough that doesn't dry out, doesn't crack, doesn't get crunchy or crumbly. Plus, no chemicals or weird ingredients. I'm sold and then sold again.

Salt Play Dough
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Heat until mixture sticks into a ball. Knead in food coloring.

See... Easy. Cheap. And infinity times better than the store bought stuff.
Only down side? Not gluten free. Good thing I wasn't the one trying to eat it ;)

snow on Super Bowl Sunday

We skipped the game and checked out the snow flurries instead.

From what I heard the game wasn't worth watching anyway. We did shake our hips during the Bruno Mars halftime show, so we didn't totally miss out on the experience.

Happy Sunday!
