happy halloween!



Happy Halloween!! Today definitely felt like a fall day. It was a perfect day for Sage's first Halloween. The yellow and orange leaves were blowing around on the ground while we were driving around running errands. It was cool enough for us to wear sweaters. We passed a grade school class on a field trip walking near the governor's mansion. The kids were all dressed up in their costumes and being led down the street by a teacher dressed up as Snow White. It made me really miss teaching.

We met up with Amy for lunch and went to a small gift shop where Kylie works to look at the knick-knacks. We watched Halloween movies on the kids channels and ate GF Belgian waffles for dinner. Sage fell asleep before we even got our first trick-or-treater so we didn't get to show off his costume. I was sooo glad that we had gone to the fall carnival a couple of weeks ago so that he could show off his cute cute bird costume! I'm loving passing out candies and seeing the neighborhood kids all dressed up.

currently obsessed with: tights, fingerless gloves, infinity scarves

While shopping in SF over the weekend I found myself drawn to accessories more than clothes. Dressing rooms are already one of my least favorite places in the world, and after having a baby 4 months ago I find myself heading toward the accessory department instead of anywhere near a dressing room. Accessories always fit!

I'm in love with fingerless gloves and infinity scarves right now. I bought two pairs on my trip, a mint green pair from Urban Outfitters that I am wearing in this picture:

and a pair of dusty pink gloves from Forever 21. Love the bows!


I also bought this infinity scarf from Forever 21:


I couldn't help myself when I saw these mustard yellow tights at Forever 21! I've already blogged about my obsession with mustard yellow for fall here.


I'm loving pastels for fall, especially mint green and dusty rose. They look great next to the traditional fall colors (browns and grays) and they add a little fun to an outfit without overdoing it.

2nd day exploring san francisco

We had such a fun 2nd day in SF. My camera died and I had left my charger at home, so I was glad we had gotten so many pictures in the morning! Because there was such a chill in the air my mom and dad bought Sage an owl hat from a street vendor to wear. He looked so cute! We visited Alcatraz and he loved being on the boat and looking out at the water. After Alcatraz we ate lunch at a restaurant on Pier 39 and did some more shopping in Union Square before we called it a day. So much walking meant sore feet and blisters pretty early in the day! We drank hot chocolate on the subway (I got a salted caramel hot chocolate and Kylie had a peppermint hot chocolate) and then watched a movie as a family and showed off our new treasures. Sage's big blue eyes were wide open and aware the whole time. He didn't want to miss anything! Since we love to travel I'm lucky to have a baby who loves to travel too! In his four short months of life he's already explored four different states.

I'm feeling so thankful to have such an amazing family. I'm very blessed.xo

exploring san francisco: day one



We had a great day exploring San Francisco! Sage had wide eyes the whole day and he was taking everything in like a sponge. He is definitely already a traveler! There was a bit of a chill from the ocean air.

When we got to San Francisco we ate lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. We don't have one at home so when we go out of town I always look up where the closest CF is so we can go! This one is on the 8th floor of the mall and the restaurant overlooks Union Square. It was an amazing view and yummy food!

We rode a cable car from Union Square to Fisherman's Warf. Sage loved going fast and feeling the wind blow against his face.

We ate dinner at Bodin's. Bodin's is a famous bakery in San Francisco that is known for their clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Look at the cool bread creatures! My favorite was the bread alligator and the bread crab.

We had such a fun day! It was the kind of day where you soak everything in because you don't want to forget anything. These are the kind of days that make memories! I am feeling very blessed and full of love after spending so much time with family!xo

outfit inspiration: holiday meeting

I attended a holiday training meeting in Sacramento this morning. This is usually a 2 hour drive, but because there was a snowstorm in the mountains, the drive took 4 hours. Good thing we left early! The training was a casual meeting so jeans were acceptable as long as they were dressed up appropriately.

Because I needed to leave my house by 6 in the morning, and I knew I would be spending a large part of my day in the car, I wanted an outfit that was comfortable but looked put together. I chose to wear a pair of dark wash skinny jeans with a lot of stretch. I paired them with layered neutrals, a black cardigan, and a red plaid scarf for a holiday-appropriate pop of color!

My hair is as straight as it gets, and when there is ANY moisture in the air it is almost impossible to work with. This is usually fine because I live in the desert, but on snowy days I need a back up plan. I knew that if I even tried to curl my hair it would end up flat and stuck straight onto my head by the time I even got to the meeting. The same goes for my bangs. I tried to work with them but it didn't take long for me to realize I needed to cut my losses and pin the bangs back for my sanity.

I was afraid that putting my hair up would end up looking too casual, so I decided to french braid my hair across the back into a side ponytail. I teased my bangs and pinned them back to keep them off my face. This way my hair was out of my way but still looked like I had put some thought into it. I LOVE using this hairstyle if I'm going to be traveling. On an airplane it's great because it keeps my hair flat to the back of my head so I can sleep against the headrest, which is almost impossible to do with a ponytail coming out of the back of your head.

I put on some gold glitter flats and headed out the door to brave the storm!xo

currently obsessed with: mustard yellow

I love it. I love it I love it I love it.

Mustard yellow is my current obsession. I love it for fall. I love it for summer, spring and winter too...but it just makes the most sense in the fall. It has such a vintage 70s feel and is classic without being boring.









When wearing or decorating with mustard, it's important that it is paired with neutrals. A color as bold as yellow should never have to compete with anything else in the look. It should pop against a neutral background. Keeping things cohesive is key. One element of a look should never fight with another. My favorite color combination right now is mustard and gray, but I also love mustard with navy, cream, or tan. If you're not sure you're ready for something mustard, add a mustard purse to an outfit or a mustard headwrap! Accessories are my favorite place to add color and whimsy to a look. Have fun! Life's too short to not wear some color.xo

individual pumpkin crisps (with a gluten free modification)


Like I said before, finding out I was allergic to gluten was pretty rough. This gets even harder when the holidays hit. Visions of pumpkin spice treats dance in my head through October and November. I get this weird urge to add cinnamon and nutmeg to everything. Today one of those urges hit. I needed something with pumpkin and I needed it now. So I came up with a gluten free pumpkin crisp recipe!

Gluten Free Pumpkin Crisp
crisp topping:
1 cup butter, cold
1 cup flour (if you're gluten free, use 1 cup of this gluten free flour blend)
1 cup oatmeal (not instant)
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
(This makes waaaay more than you'll need for this recipe, but I like to keep some of this crisp in the freezer to have on hand. It is great to put over fruit pie fillings for a quick treat when you need one.)

Blend the dry ingredients together, then work the butter into the dry ingredients with your hands until crumbly. It shouldn't be smooth like cookie dough. I decided to add about 1/2 cup of coarsely chopped pecans to my crisp. You could also add almonds if you want to. Put the crisp topping in the refrigerator until you're ready to use it, if you let it get too soft it won't crumble correctly.



 Next, I made the pumpkin pie as directed on the side of the Libby's 100% pure pumpkin can. I poured the pumpkin pie filling about 2/3 of the way full into greased ramekins and put the ramekins on a cookie sheet and into the oven to bake as directed on the pumpkin puree can.

When the pumpkin pies were done cooking, I took them out of the oven and crumbled the crisp topping over the top. The pies went back into the oven on broil until the crisp topping was browned and starts to bubble. Watch close because this only takes a couple of minutes!

Remove from the oven, let cool, and enjoy by itself or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!xo

homemade baby food adventure #1: banana avocado

We woke up this morning to rain and yucky weather, so I figured it would be a perfect day to try making baby food.



Sage woke up happy as a little clam so I knew that he would be open to trying something new! I found this website of what foods to introduce at different ages and how. Thank you, pinterest! I had errands to run in the morning anyway so while we were out I picked up a ripe avocado. We had bananas on hand already so I decided that would be a perfect mix! Neither bananas or avocados need to be cooked before they are made into baby food, and since we're both new to homemade baby food I decided the easier the better!



I mashed the avocado and the banana together using a fork, but it was still too clumpy...



so I put them into the blender until they were the perfect consistency.



Look how much better it looks than the nasty baby food in a jar (which is supposed to be squash but looks..and smells..nothing like squash) haha



Okay! Moment of truth! I put Sage in his chair, slapped a bib on him, and hoped for the best!

He was a happy and full baby! Our first baby food adventure was a huge success. I can't wait to try more baby foods on my little taste tester!xo
